In
the late 1980s The Shaw Company, developer of Luther Village, set
out to design a retirement community unlike any other in Chicagoland.
Paramount to their plans were full-equity ownership and affiliation
with the Lutheran Home for access to quality health care. The pioneering
result was Luther Village, the first ownership retirement community
in the Midwest.
The first Luther Village homeowners moved into courtyard homes in
1990. The final mid-rise, Dunton House, opened in 1999 and signaled
the end of all construction on the Luther Village campus.
Architects for Luther Village were Solomon, Cordwell, Buenz.
Both
Pepper Construction and W. B. Olsen Construction provided top-quality
buildings.
